Exporting Sassy to Antigua – A tail of Bureaucracy and Cat-titude

When I first decided to swap British drizzle for turquoise Caribbean seas, I knew there’d be a lot to organise. But what I didn’t quite anticipate was that my biggest logistical challenge would come in a furry, four-pawed, whisker-twitching package – my one year old cat, Sassy.

You’d think booking a one way ticket to paradise would be the tricky part. Oh no. That’s Childs play compared to exporting a feline to Antigua. Apparently, cats can’t just hop aboard with a jaunty “meow” and a carry-on. There’s paperwork, vaccinations, official stamps, import permits, and a whole lot of “paws and reflect” moments in between.

The Jab and the paper chase.

The adventure began at the vet’s where Sassy eyed the rabies vaccination syringe like it was a mortal enemy. She forgave me but I could feel the feline judgement radiating off her all the way home. Once her microchip, jab, and health certificate were sorted, the next step was applying for an import permit from the Antiguan authorities – which sounds much grander than it actually is.

It involved a few emails, scanned documents, and a polite wait while Sassy supervised from her favourite windowsill, clearly unconcerned that her emigration status was pending.

Travel Dilemma

Then came the question – how does one fly a cat across the Atlantic? I considered every option: in-cabin, in cargo, cat courier, teleportation (sadly still unavailable). Eventually I contacted a few pet travel companies who spoke in a reassuringly calm tone about “logistics” and temperature controlled environments”.

Soon we will both be boarding that flight – me dreaming of sunshine, and Sassy, no doubt, plotting her revenge of the indignity of an airline crate. But when we finally arrive and she takes her first sniff of Caribbean air, I know it will all be worth it.

Because this isn’t just my new adventure – it’s ours. Paws on deck, whiskers to the wind…….Antigua here we come.
